Big Society Capital

Big Society Capital is an independent financial institution with a social mission, set up to help grow social investment in the UK. Our aim is to improve the lives of people in the UK by connecting investment to charities and social enterprises that are creating social change. We know that investment can help charities and social enterprises achieve more. We believe the greatest chance to improve lives comes when investors and enterprises are both motivated by social mission. We engage with investors, fund managers, charities and social enterprises to make it easier to use social investment. With our co-investors, we have made over £1bn of new capital available to organisations with a social mission, through investments into fund managers and social banks. We have a special focus on: providing homes for people in need; supporting communities to improve lives; and early action to prevent problems. We do this by bringing together our investment capital (up to £600m), our expertise (team of 40) and our network of partners. We put our efforts into:

1. Meeting the immediate demand for diverse kinds of social investment

2. The vital infrastructure, testing out different models

Associates will typically work on between 2 and 4 discreet projects where we strive to find a balance between work the Associates find interesting and engaging and what adds value to our business. This also provides the opportunity to have a good oversight of the social investment market and work closely with several others in the team.

Past projects have included developing an origination pack to support conversations with different types of investors, analysis on the Venture Philanthropy space in the UK, supporting on the design and launch of a Get Informed, our campaign to support board members of charities and social enterprises understand the opportunities and risks of social investment. Associates will also have an opportunity to work on at least one social investment deal, depending on deal pipeline and availability, and will be part of the deal team, taking it from application to investment committee to the organisation's strategy.
