Fellow Spotlight: Jessica Thorne

Jess Thorne spotlight

We’re always thrilled to hear about how our community is creating impact and bringing about positive change. This month we shine a light on Jessica Thorn, October 2020 Fellow, who continued working at OCEANIUM, her second placement, after completing the programme.

I was in the October 2020 cohort – a very inspirational group. OCEANIUM was my second placement and even in the interview with co-founder Karen Scofield Seal, it felt particularly special: an ambitious impact business applying ground-breaking science and technology to make seaweed-based products that provide viable alternatives to resource-intensive products.

Fast-forward two years and I’m still at OCEANIUM, now as the Corporate Affairs Director. I am also a volunteer host for Foodcycle. At OCEANIUM, most recently I’ve really been enjoying seaweed supply chain planning, our materials business development, and impact measurement and reporting frameworks. I’m learning and being challenged every day working alongside a smart, fun and passionate team who are driven by scientific research. It’s utterly fascinating.

That’s the wonder of the On Purpose Associate Programme: it’s a ‘Goldilocks of impact’ moment to try, find, or point you in the direction of, something or many things, often unexpected, that really float your boat (sorry – ocean puns are an occupational hazard.)

At OCEANIUM we’re always interested in hearing from like-minded partners or those who want to learn more – so do get in touch!
